Description

Adolescence is a unique window for learning how relationships work. During this period, young people are not only navigating friendships, romantic feelings, and shifting family dynamics, they are also forming the relational patterns they are likely to carry into adulthood. Skills such as communication, boundary-setting, empathy, conflict repair, and self-respect are not innate; they are learned through repeated experiences within close relationships. The family environment is often the first and most influential place where these skills are practised.

An important part of supporting adolescents in their relationships is becoming aware of our own beliefs about what relationships should look like.

Many parents carry expectations shaped by their own upbringing, cultural norms, or past experiences, some of which may have been difficult or unhealthy. Without realising it, these assumptions can influence how we respond to our teenagers’ friendships, conflicts, or emotional needs.

Adolescence often brings these patterns into sharper focus, not because parents are doing something wrong, but because this stage asks for a different way of relating.
